The National Theater São João (TNSJ) is a public entity with the mission of creating and presenting high-quality theatrical performances in various genres, promoting the connection of the audience with reference works, both classical and contemporary. It prioritizes the defense of the Portuguese language and dramaturgy in that language, seeking to attract new audiences and foster the internationalization of its theatrical activities. The TNSJ collaborates with European entities, promotes co-productions, and participates in international festivals. In addition, it strives to decentralize culture and qualify both artists and technicians. The structure includes the National Theater São João, the Carlos Alberto Theater, and the São Bento da Vitória Monastery.
